The best thing I read this week was an article from Resident Advisor in which they interviewed "scene veteran" DJ Flight and had him select his ten most influential drum and bass (DnB) tracks of the 2000's.
I stumbled upon this article after being referred to Resident Advisor by former Complex editor Lauren Nostro. She said Resident Advisor was known for its quality EDM reporting. I was not disappointed here.
I am a big EDM fan, and even listen to a good amount of DnB, but know next to nothing about this era of DnB, certainly not on the level that DJ Flight does.
I appreciate that this article brought in an expert who was actually involved in the scene, not just an outside observer. DJ Flight was there when it was happening, and in many ways doing it himself.
The fact that it was written in DJ Flight's voice added much character to the piece. Especially because he went beyond the aesthetics of each track, and included context of the broader scene as a whole, and how other artists and fans adapted to the influence of the tracks.
Of course such a list would not be complete without the music itself, and Resident Advisor made sure to embed YouTube links to each track discussed. This made for an experience that transcended normal reading, and really pulled me into the article. I played each song and did other things while listening to each song.
Overall I'm glad I read it because I know feel more educated on an aspect of electronic music that I had no knowledge of prior, and now feel more compelled to explore the other names and songs that were discussed.
